Key art, Steam assets and press kit: every store and library image in the sizes Steam requires, plus materials for the media

We paint key art, the main illustration of your game, and compose every image on your Steam page from it: header, small, main and vertical capsules, library images and the page background. On top of that we prepare a press kit where journalists, curators and streamers can grab the logo, key art, screenshots, GIFs and facts about the game in a minute. A capsule set made from your art starts at 900 PLN net.

What you get in a key art, Steam and press kit project

Steam images are delivered at the exact sizes from Steamworks, and the press kit in one downloadable folder. File names say what is inside and where each one goes.

  • Key art

The main illustration of the game at high resolution, layered, with a version without the logo for further crops.

  • Store capsules

Header, small, main and vertical capsules, each composed separately for its format.

  • Library images

Library capsule, a hero image without text and the logo on a transparent background.

  • Page background

A calm background for the game page that does not compete with the description and screenshots.

  • Press kit

In the top package, game and studio logo versions for light and dark backgrounds, key art with and without the logo, captioned screenshots, gameplay GIFs and key art crops.

  • Fact sheet

In the press kit: date, platforms, price, player count, languages, short and long description, features and contact.

  • Source files

Layered files of the key art and every composition, ready for further versions.

What is and is not allowed on capsules

Steam rules for store and library images. Art that breaks them can be rejected when the page is reviewed.

  • Base capsules

Only game artwork, the name and an official subtitle. No review scores, awards, discount text or calls to action such as buy now or wishlist now.

  • Event text

Only as an Artwork Override for up to one month, localised into every language of the game and describing content that is already available.

  • Library capsule

Must include the game logo and may include a subtitle, with no other text.

  • Library hero

Artwork only, no words at all. Steam places the logo over it separately.

  • Library logo

Only the game logotype, optionally with a logomark, on a transparent background.

  • Screenshots

They should show gameplay, without concept art, awards or marketing copy.

The first thing players and journalists see before they click

On Steam a game competes for attention with a small rectangle: in search results, on new release lists, in the discovery queue and during sales. Before anyone watches a trailer or reads a description, the capsule has to say what the game is, what genre and what mood. If it does not, the player scrolls on.

That is why we start with key art, an illustration that captures the most important things about the game: the hero, the world, the conflict and the style. Every store and library image, press material and post comes from it. We paint key art at high resolution and in layers, so it can be recomposed for every format.

A capsule is not cropped key art. The header has the proportions of a wide banner, the vertical capsule is nearly square, and the small capsule is so small that in practice it fits only the logo and one clear motif. We compose each image separately, check it at the size Steam displays it and follow Steam rules: base capsules may only show game artwork, the game name and its official subtitle.

A journalist or streamer who wants to cover your game needs a few things right away: the logo on a transparent background, key art for the header, some good screenshots, a short description and the release date. If they have to ask by email and wait, it is easy to put the story off or pick another game.

A press kit gathers these materials in one place, organised and labelled. File names say what is inside, screenshots have captions, and facts about the game can be copied into an article without retyping. We build it from materials you already have and fill in what is missing: we pick the best screenshots and prepare logo versions, key art crops and gameplay GIFs.

We reserve about 15% of the project time for revisions. It helps to have the game logo before composing capsules, because its shape drives the layout of every format. If you do not have one, we design the game logo as a separate service. It is worth having the press kit ready before the announcement, because that is when media look for materials fastest.

What key art, Steam image and press kit pricing depends on

The biggest difference is whether we paint the key art from scratch and how much press kit material has to be made.

  1. 1

    Key art from scratch

Painting the main illustration is most of the work in the project.

  2. 2

    Number of characters

Every character in the composition is a separate drawing with a pose, lighting and detail.

  3. 3

    Source material

A layered illustration is recomposed faster than a flat file.

  4. 4

    Existing press materials

A press kit built from organised materials is faster than one that needs new screenshots and graphics.

  5. 5

    GIFs

Each GIF means choosing a moment, trimming it and optimising its size.

How not to overpay

  • Design the game logo before the capsules
  • Send key art in layers
  • Gather press kit materials in one folder
  • Prepare the game description and facts
  • Record gameplay in high quality

Who we make key art, Steam images and press kits for

  • Studios before an announcement

When the Steam page should start collecting wishlists and the game should reach media and creators on announcement day.

  • Developers with finished key art

When the illustration exists but every Steam format still has to be laid out.

  • Games before a festival or launch

When the game page needs a refresh before an important date and the demo should draw media attention.

  • Solo developers

When materials are scattered across drives and need organising.

  • Games in a crowdfunding campaign

When media and creators need materials about the campaign.

  • Publishers

When several games in a catalogue should have images at the same level and press kits with the same layout.

What to prepare before ordering key art, Steam images and a press kit

A game we can look at helps most: a build, a recording or screenshots. Send everything you have and we will make the selection together.

0 / 7 ready

  • A description of the game, its genre and players
  • Game and studio logos, if they exist
  • A build, gameplay footage or screenshots
  • Character designs and concept art
  • Games on the same Steam shelf you compare yourself with
  • Features, date, platforms and price for the fact sheet
  • The announcement or launch date and a contact address for media

A press kit in a folder or on a page

A press kit can live in several places. It works best in both.

Downloadable folder

One archive with every file, which can be sent by email or linked.

Press kit page

A page with a preview of the materials, which can be browsed without downloading and found in search.

Ready-made tools

Press kit services and templates, such as Rami Ismail's presskit(), organise the layout. We prepare materials so they fit them too.

Game website

A full site with the trailer, description and press kit that serves players and media at once.

Steam images and a press kit that earn clicks, wishlists and coverage

What we pay attention to when designing Steam pages and press kits for games.

Key art as the source of every image

Key art is the illustration you use throughout the life of the game: on Steam, in the press kit, on a trade show poster, in the website header and in posts. That is why we paint it wider than any single format, with the hero and the key elements placed so they can be recropped to portrait, landscape and square.

Good key art answers three questions: who am I playing, where am I and what is happening. The genre should be clear at once, because players compare your game with many others on the same list. Steam itself advises that a capsule should tell the customer something important about the game and give a sense of the gameplay.

Legible at the smallest size

The small capsule is 462 by 174 pixels, and Steam makes even smaller versions from it, 184 by 69 and 120 by 45 pixels. At that size illustration detail disappears, and what remains is the logo and one contrasting shape. According to Steamworks, the logo should nearly fill the small capsule.

That is why the small capsule can look different from the other images, and Steam allows it. We look at every composition at real size in a list of results next to other games, not zoomed in inside a graphics app.

Facts that can be copied

Someone writing about a game needs data: name, studio, release date, platforms, price, languages, player count. If they have to dig through the store page and the description, mistakes happen. A fact sheet puts it all in one place, in a form that can be copied into the text.

We prepare the game description in two lengths: a short one of a sentence or two, and a longer one with the key features. We write specifically: what the player does and what sets the game apart, instead of general praise.

Images ready to use

A logo on a white background as a JPG will not work on a header with a dark image. That is why the press kit has transparent logo versions, light and dark, and key art without the logo, which an editor can crop to their format. Journalists and creators like to use a clean illustration as an article header or video thumbnail.

We pick screenshots that show different parts of the game: exploration, combat, the interface, the characters. Gameplay GIFs work well in articles and posts, because they show motion without embedding a video.

One brief and a press kit before the announcement

A game page works best when the capsules, trailer and screenshots tell the same story. If the key art promises dark horror and the trailer shows a colourful platformer, players feel misled. That is why, when several services from Games and creators are ordered together, we work from one brief.

The best time for a press kit is before the game announcement or a festival. Then every message to the media and creators can include a link to the full set of materials, not a promise that they are coming soon.

It is worth updating the press kit at every important moment: a new trailer, a release date, a major update. That is why we hand over the source files and a documented folder structure, so you can add new materials yourself.
