What we check in a print file

These are four things that can make a printer send a file back or a print look different from the screen.

  1. Colours

An RGB design looks different on paper than on screen. We convert colours to CMYK and warn you which shades will change.

  2. Bleed

Backgrounds and graphics extend past the trim line, usually by 3 mm, so no white edge remains after cutting.

  3. Safe area

Text and logos stay a few millimetres from the edge, because the cutting blade has a tolerance.

  4. Black text

Small text prints in pure black, while large black areas use a rich black mix so they look deep.

What you get in a print design

We check every file against the printer requirements before sending it. If your printer has its own specification, we follow it.

  • Print-ready file

A PDF that meets the printer standard, usually PDF/X, with 3 mm bleed or whatever large-format printing requires.

  • CMYK colours

Brand colours converted for print, and for spot colours the matching Pantone references.

  • Outlined fonts

Text converted to outlines so the printer cannot substitute the typeface.

  • Images at the right resolution

Photos and illustrations at a resolution that suits the format, usually 300 dpi for small formats.

  • Preview file

A light PDF or PNG to send by email and show on social media.

  • Open file

The source in the program it was made in, so details are easy to change for the next print run.

  • Help with ordering

On request: choosing paper and finishes, talking to the printer and checking the proof.

Print materials one by one

Designs and print files, from a business card to a trade show booth.

A print design is more than a nice file

A design that looks good on screen can come back from the printer with a cut-off logo, a white strip at the edge or a colour that is clearly darker on paper. That is why we prepare every print design for a specific format and technique from the start: with bleed, a safe area, in CMYK and with the colour profile the printer expects.

We do not print or manufacture materials. We deliver print-ready files and, if you like, help you place the order: we suggest paper and finishes, check the printer requirements and review the proof before printing. You pay the printer directly, so you choose the printer yourself.

This page shows bundle packages for when you need several materials at once. Each type of print also has its own page with a price and details: business cards, flyers and folders, catalogues, posters and billboards, roll-ups and booths, labels, packaging, menus, calendars, vouchers, stickers, merch and vehicle wraps.

We design every material in your brand style. If you do not have an identity yet, we start with a logo or a simple set of rules so that your flyer and catalogue do not look like two different companies.

How a print design comes together

  1. Brief and specs1-2 days

Formats, print run, printer and print date. If the printer has its own requirements, we ask for them at the start.

We reserve about 15% of the project time for revisions. In print it is worth finishing revisions before the proof, because changes after the proof is approved usually cost money at the printer.

What a print design price depends on

The smallest designs, like a business card, have a fixed price. For bigger materials three things change the price.

  1. 1

    Pages and formats

A 24-page catalogue is a different scope from a flyer, and the same artwork in five formats means five adaptations.

  2. 2

    State of the content

Ready copy and photos shorten the work. Copy to edit or photos to cut out add hours.

  3. 3

    Tables and data

Price lists, specification tables and infographics take longer to set than plain text.

  4. 4

    Technical requirements

Large-format print, spot colours, die-lines and finishes need separate layers and checks.

How not to overpay

  • Order materials in one package instead of one at a time every few weeks
  • Send final copy in one file
  • Ask the printer for its file specification before the project starts
  • Ask for an open file so you only change details for the next print run

Who we design print for

  • Service businesses

Business cards, door-drop flyers and a van wrap so local customers remember one brand.

  • Companies at trade fairs

A roll-up, backdrop, catalogue and flyers designed as one series and ready for a fixed date.

  • Manufacturers and product brands

Labels, packaging and product catalogues with 3D packshots instead of a photo shoot.

  • Restaurants and salons

Menus, vouchers, price lists and a sign in one style, with a template to update prices yourself.

  • Organisations and schools

Event posters, diplomas and calendars that print well even at an ordinary digital print shop.

How to prepare for a print project

Knowing the format and the printer right at the start saves the most time.

0 / 6 ready

  • Format and page count or the dimensions of the material
  • The printer name or its file specification, if you have it
  • Final copy and contact details
  • Your logo in vector format and brand colours
  • Full-resolution photos, not screenshots from social media
  • The date the materials need to be printed by

Print design prices for single materials

Print without surprises

How to choose a print method, paper and printer, and how we help with the order even though we do not print.

Digital, offset and large format

Digital print needs no plates, so it pays off for small runs, short deadlines and materials where every copy can differ, for example with numbering or a name. Offset needs plates, but on larger runs the cost per copy drops and accurate colours, including spot colours, are easier.

Large-format print is a world of its own: roll-ups, banners, billboards and wraps are printed on different machines and materials, with different file requirements. That is why we ask about the method and quantity on every project before preparing files.

How to choose paper

Paper changes how a design is perceived as much as the artwork does. Matte coated paper gives an elegant, calm effect, gloss makes photo colours pop, and uncoated and textured papers add character but shift shades and soften fine detail.

Paper weight affects how a material feels in the hand. Flyers for wide distribution are usually printed thinner, business cards, covers and invitations thicker. The safest way is to ask the printer for a paper sample book or a test print on the final paper.

How we help with the order

We do not print or handle payments for printing, but we help you through the order. We suggest the method, paper and finishes, check that the printer quote covers what you need and adjust the files to its requirements.

When the printer sends a proof, a test print or a file for approval, we check it before the run starts: colours, bleed, trimming and every detail. You choose the printer and pay it directly for printing.

Colours on screen and on paper

A monitor emits light and paper reflects it, so the same colour always looks a little different on screen and in print. Intense greens, blues and oranges change most and can look noticeably duller in CMYK print.

When the brand colour is critical for you, it is worth printing it as a Pantone spot colour or at least ordering a test print. On every project we warn which shades will change in print before files go to the printer.
