A product people want on their bathroom shelf

Cosmetics are bought with the eyes. Before customers read the ingredients and benefits, they see the bottle, colour, shape and typography, in a shop, on a product photo or in a post. A cosmetics brand has to say at first glance who it is for, what character it has and why it is worth reaching for.

We design cosmetics brands from the name to the packaging. We start with positioning and the name, design the logo and graphic system, and then labels and boxes for the whole line. Each pack is designed on the manufacturer's die line, accounting for the shape of the bottle, jar or tube.

A cosmetics label carries a lot of mandatory information: the responsible person, the nominal content, the date of minimum durability or the period after opening, precautions, the batch number, the function and the list of ingredients. Article 19 of Regulation 1223/2009 sets them out. We plan space for them from the start, while your responsible person or laboratory prepares the content.

We do not print packaging. We prepare files for the printer and packaging manufacturer, help with the proof, and 3D packshots come from the same design, so your online store and marketplaces have images before the first production run.

Kits for cosmetics brands

Two kits: a new brand's first product and a full line with a campaign. Each element is a package from our price list. Kit prices are the sum of the starting prices of packages from our price list, with no surcharge and no discount. The quote gives the exact scope and timeline.

Mistakes in cosmetics brand projects

They show up in production, at the laboratory or on the shelf, when packaging is already ordered.

  • No room for ingredients

A label designed without the ingredients list ends in tiny print or the need to add a leaflet.

  • A design without a die line

A flat rectangle label does not fit a tapered bottle, and box graphics drift across the folds.

  • A line without a system

A cream, serum and toner in similar colours get confused by customers and in the warehouse.

  • A name already taken

A name similar to an existing cosmetics brand can block trademark registration and marketplace sales.

  • A decorative typeface in the ingredients

Ingredients set in a narrow or ornate typeface are illegible. On the back label we use a plain typeface at an adequate size.

  • Packshots only after production

Waiting for physical packaging delays the store and campaign launch by weeks.

Cosmetics labelling: a checklist

Under Article 19 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. This is not legal advice. The labelling content is prepared by the responsible person or laboratory.

Responsible person

The name and address of the responsible person, and the country of origin for imported products.

Content and durability

The nominal content and the date of minimum durability or, where durability exceeds 30 months, the period after opening with the open jar symbol.

Batch and warnings

The batch number, particular precautions and the function of the product, unless clear from its presentation.

Ingredients list

Preceded by the word ingredients, using the common ingredient names. It may appear on the outer packaging only.

Language

Some information is given in the language set by the law of the country where the product reaches the end user.

Little space

When precautions or ingredients do not fit, the regulation allows an enclosed leaflet, label, tag or card.

Cosmetics packaging and its requirements

Every container has different limits for the design.

Building a cosmetics brand step by step

Positioning before design

The cosmetics market is crowded, and a new brand has to answer quickly what makes it different.Natural ingredients, minimalism, men's grooming, sensitive skin care, products for children: each positioning needs a different visual language.

That is why we start with a conversation about customers, price and sales channels. A brand sold in drugstores needs different shelf impact from a boutique brand sold through Instagram and its own store.

A name you can protect

A cosmetics brand name goes on packaging, the website, profiles and, if things go well, into the trademark register.A name similar to an existing brand can block registration or marketplace sales, and changing it after the packaging is printed is expensive.

In our naming service we prepare candidates and check for a free domain, and in the larger packages we do a preliminary review of the UPRP and EUIPO trademark databases. For a final assessment of registrability, it is worth hiring a patent attorney.

A label with room for ingredients

A cosmetics ingredients list can be long and the bottle small. If it does not fit, the regulation allows it on the outer packaging, the box, and where there is no room, on an enclosed leaflet or tag. We make that decision at the design stage, not at the printer.

We keep the front of the label for the brand name, the product name and its function, and lay out the mandatory labelling in a clear grid on the back or the box. The responsible person or laboratory prepares the content, and we take care of legibility.

A product line in one system

When a brand adds further creams, serums and toners, they should look like one family. We design a system: a fixed layout with the logo and name and an element that distinguishes the product, such as a colour, pattern or line marking.

With the system rules, the next product is faster and cheaper to design, and the whole line looks consistent on the shelf and in the online store.

3D packshots before production

An online store, marketplaces and drugstore catalogues need images before the product physically exists.3D packshots are made from the packaging model and label design, rendering glossy glass, a matte tube or foil.

From the same model we prepare colour variants, styled scenes for campaigns and a short animation for ads. A new product in the line is a label change in the model, not a new photo shoot.

Drugstores, salons and fairs

A brand going into drugstores, beauty salons or trade fairs needs materials for buyers and partners: a product catalogue with packshots and data, a wholesale price list, a roll-up for the stand and a leaflet for salons that recommend the products.

We design them in the style of the packaging, from the same 3D packshots, so the catalogue, stand and drugstore shelf look like one brand. Files are prepared for the printer and the stand builder.

Launching the brand

A cosmetics brand launches on social media, with creators and in the online store.A key visual, post templates and paid campaign creatives in the style of the packaging make the brand recognisable from day one.

We design campaign graphics in Meta and Google formats, with test variants, and templates for ongoing posts in Canva, so the brand team can publish without a designer.
